Juventus announce their first summer signing ahead of the new season

Juventus signed Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz from Aston Villa on Sunday in a five-year deal worth an estimated $53.5 million.

Luiz, who scored 22 goals in 204 games for Aston Villa, passed a routine medical examination while he was with his country's national team in the Copa America competition before officially announcing his move to the "Old Lady" team.

"Aston Villa can confirm that Douglas Luiz has joined Juventus," Aston Villa said on its official website.

This is the first deal made by Juventus during the current summer transfer window in order to strengthen the squad of new Italian coach Thiago Motta ahead of the new season.

Luiz, who won the gold medal for Brazil at the Tokyo Olympics, was named Aston Villa's best player for the 2022-2023 season, but Villa's need to comply with the Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules forced Spanish manager Unai Emery to agree to sell his Brazilian star.

Luiz joined Aston Villa from Manchester City in 2019 and contributed significantly to the club's fourth-place finish in the Premier League last season and qualification for the Champions League.
